“PREPARE YE THE WAY OF THE LORD”
- Prepare the way for the coming of the Lord. Prepare it
for his definitive coming. On this second Sunday we continue to
live Advent in the key of “preparation”. The whole of creation
prepares for the coming of the Lord in Isaiah. And in the Gospel,
John the Baptist takes over and announces the one who is strong
and brings the Spirit. As the day of the Lord arrives, the day when
we will see the new heaven and the new earth, the Church recalls
with the Letter of St. Peter the patience of God and the need to
prepare for that encounter by living in peace with him
- On this Second Sunday of Advent, the Liturgy proclaims
the beginning of the Gospel according to St. Mark. It gives a
brief presentation of Jesus and shows John the Baptist as the
forerunner, the one who announces the coming of the Messiah.
Every morning God continues to call Christians to be, like John the
Baptist, signs that speak to the world of the coming of the Lord.
- The initial affirmation of the Gospel according to Mark
is that “Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God” (Mk 1:1). He is the
“anointed one,” the one sent by God to save his people, but his
true identity is revealed only on the cross. Only there does it
become clear that he is the Son obedient to the will of the Father.
- The “Gospel” or Good News of Jesus begins with the
preaching of John the Baptist. His mission, stated with a quotation
from the Old Testament, is to prepare the way for the Lord.
Therefore, he is a messenger who is in function of another person
greater than himself and who is understood with reference to that
other. Christian readers know that he speaks of Jesus, but in the
story this has not yet been revealed.
- It is said that John the Baptist’s preaching consisted of a
call to conversion accompanied by a baptism in the Jordan that
ratified the decision to change one’s life and offered forgiveness
of sins. If in the past the people of Israel were tested and purified,
now the Baptist makes a new call to purification and conversion.
- For reflection:
John the Baptist was the voice that announced the coming of
the Messiah. According to this Sunday’s Gospel passage, it is
emphasized that he was characterized by austerity, humility…
what attitudes of the Baptist can we make our own during this
Advent? The certainty that the Messiah was coming shaped John’s
lifestyle. To what extent is Jesus occupying a decisive place in my
life as well?

“ALLANAD LOS SENDEROS DEL SEÑOR”
- Preparad el camino para la venida del Señor. Preparadlo
para su venida definitiva. En este segundo domingo continuamos
viviendo el Adviento en clave de «preparación». La creación entera
se prepara para la venida del Señor en Isaías. Y en el Evangelio,
Juan Bautista toma el relevo y anuncia al que es fuerte y trae el
Espíritu. Mientras llega el día del Señor, el día en que veremos el
cielo nuevo y la tierra nueva, la Iglesia recuerda con la Carta de
San Pedro la paciencia de Dios y la necesidad de prepararse para
ese encuentro viviendo en paz con Él.
- Este segundo domingo de Adviento se proclama en la
Liturgia el comienzo del Evangelio según San Marcos. En él se hace
una breve presentación de Jesús y se muestra a Juan Bautista
como el precursor, el que anuncia la llegada del Mesías. Cada
mañana Dios sigue llamando a los cristianos para que sean con
sus vidas, como Juan Bautista, señales que hablen al mundo de la
venida del Señor
- La afirmación inicial del Evangelio según San Marcos es
que «Jesús es el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios» (Mc 1,1). Es el «ungido»,
el enviado por Dios para salvar a su pueblo, pero su verdadera
identidad sólo se revela en la cruz. Sólo en ella queda claro que es
el Hijo obediente a la voluntad del Padre.
- El «Evangelio» o Buena Noticia de Jesús se inicia con la
predicación de Juan Bautista. Se misión, enunciada con una cita
del Antiguo Testamento, es la de preparar el camino al Señor. Por
tanto, es un mensajero que está en función de otra persona mayor
que Él y que se entiende con referencia a ese otro. Los lectores
cristianos sabemos que habla de Jesús, pero en el relato esto no
ha sido revelado todavía.
- Se dice que la predicación de Juan Bautista consistía en
una llamada a la conversión acompañada de un bautismo en el
Jordán que ratificaba la decisión a cambiar de vida y ofrecía el
perdón de los pecados. Si antaño el pueblo de Israel fue puesto a
prueba y purificado, ahora el Bautista hace una nueva llamada a
la purificación y a la conversión.
- Para reflexionar:
Juan Bautista fue la voz que anunció la llegada del Mesías.
Según el pasaje del Evangelio de este domingo, se resalta que le
caracterizaban la austeridad, la humildad… ¿qué actitudes del
Bautista podemos hacer nuestras en este Adviento? La certeza
que el Mesías llegaba configuró el estilo de vida de Juan. ¿hasta
qué punto Jesús está ocupando un lugar decisivo también en mi
vida?
