WATCH, FOR YOU DO NOT KNOW WHEN THE MASTER
OF THE HOUSE WILL COME”.
- Today we begin a new liturgical year, a new year in the
Church, and with it we begin the season of Advent. It is a time to
prepare with renewed faith for the birth of Jesus at Christmas and
also to prepare for his definitive return
- The readings of this first Sunday of Advent place before our
eyes the coming of the Lord. This coming is expressed in Isaiah as
the longing of a people who recognize that they are far from God,
and who cry out, as we read in the psalm, to be restored and for
his power. In the second reading and the Gospel, the perspective
changes: Christians have already recognized the coming of God
in Jesus of Nazareth. That is why they are recommended in the
first letter to the Corinthians to be faithful as they await his return
and, in the passage from Mark, to live vigilantly and committed to
building the Kingdom.
- This Sunday’s brief parable illustrating the exhortation to
vigilance is easy to understand. The man who goes on a journey
is Christ risen and ascended into heaven. He leaves his house, the
Church, in the care of his servants. Each one must fulfill the task
assigned to him. We are all, in a certain sense, “gatekeepers” who
must remain awake, vigilant, because the Lord is certainly coming,
but we do not know when.
- This teaching, far from being a proposal to live in fear of
an uncertain future, is for the Christian community an invitation to
hope, to revitalize faith. We do not know the hour because every
hour is a good time to open ourselves to the Gospel and to commit
our existence. To remain vigilant and faithful to the message of
Jesus in the present is a way of preparing oneself for the future
that undoubtedly awaits. It is not a call to anguish, but to be alert.
- For reflection: from today’s Gospel passage, what do we
need to change in our lives in order to live Advent properly; where
might we begin; “Be vigilant! Be on the alert” do we live aware
that our goal is the encounter with Christ or have we settled in this
world?

Desde el escritorio del Padre Gabriel Toro:
“VELAD, PUES NO SABÉIS CUÁNDO VENDRÁ EL
DUEÑO DE LA CASA”
- Hoy iniciamos un nuevo año litúrgico. ¡Estamos en año
nuevo en la Iglesia! y con ello iniciamos el tiempo de adviento. Es
un tiempo para preparar con renovada fe el nacimiento de Jesús en
Navidad y también para preparar su vuelta definitiva.
- Las lecturas de este primer domingo de Adviento ponen
ante nuestros ojos la venida del Señor. Esta venida se expresa en
Isaías como anhelo de un pueblo que se reconoce lejos de Dios, y
que clama, como leemos en el salmo, para ser restaurado y por su
poder. En la segunda lectura y el Evangelio, la perspectiva cambia: los
cristianos ya han reconocido la venida de Dios en Jesús de Nazaret.
Por eso se les recomienda en la primera carta a los Corintios que
sean fieles mientras esperan su regreso y, en el pasaje de Marcos,
que vivan vigilantes y comprometidos en la construcción del Reino
- Como aquellos primeros cristianos, también nosotros
vivimos entre dos certezas: que el Señor viene y que no sabemos
cuándo. El Evangelio nos despierta de nuestros letargos al tiempo
que nos recuerda nuestra tarea en el mundo.
- La breve parábola de este domingo que ilustra la
exhortación a la vigilancia es fácil de entender. El hombre que se
va de viaje es Cristo resucitado y ascendido al cielo. Deja su casa,
la Iglesia, al cuidado de sus servidores. Cada uno debe cumplir con
la tarea asignada. Todos somo, en cierto modo, “porteros” que
hemos de permanecer despiertos, vigilantes, porque ciertamente
va a venir el Señor, pero no sabemos cuándo.
- Esta enseñanza, lejos de ser una propuesta para vivir
en el temor de un futuro incierto, es para la comunidad cristiana
una invitación a la esperanza, a revitalizar la fe. No se sabe la
hora porque todas las horas son buenas para abrirse al Evangelio
y comprometerse la existencia. Mantenerse vigilantes y fieles al
mensaje de Jesús en el presente es una forma de prepararse para el
futuro que sin duda aguarda. No es una llamada a la angustia, sino
a estar alerta.
- Para reflexionar: desde el pasaje del evangelio de hoy,
¿qué debemos cambiar en nuestra vida para vivir adecuadamente
el Adviento? ¿por dónde podríamos empezar?; “¡cuidado! Estad
alerta” ¿vivimos conscientes de que nuestra meta es el encuentro
con Cristo o nos hemos instalado en este mundo?
