“FORGIVE YOUR NEIGHBOR’S OFFENSE, AND YOUR
SINS WILL BE FORGIVEN YOU WHEN YOU ASK FOR IT”
- This Sunday’s Gospel leaves us with a great teaching on
forgiveness. The Apostle Peter asks Jesus how many times one
should forgive the brother who has offended him: “How many
times must I forgive? up to seven times?”. Jesus’ answer does not
contain human calculations, but is marked by his infinite mercy;
“I do not say to you up to seven times, but up to seventy times
seven”. Thus we can see that the Gospel is a proclamation of total
forgiveness and complete liberation. It is not enough, then, that
there be no more oppressed, but it is necessary to ensure that
there be no more oppression. Only in this way will the former
debtor who has been forgiven not become a new oppressor
- We men are mediators with one another, for good or for
evil. We facilitate or hinder the growth of grace, of salvation, of
total liberation. At birth, we are given a world, an old world, yet
one provided with the image of God. Christ is the beginning, the
image of the Father and the prototype of the new man. In Jesus
Christ we can observe the greatest example of forgiveness, in his
agony he forgave his murderers: “Father, forgive them for they
know not what they do”.
- The ancient law of “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a
tooth” or the elementary instinct of revenge had a corrective in
the “commandment of forgiveness” (Lev 19:17-18). In the first
reading the wise man delves and comments: “How can a man hold
a grudge against another and ask the Lord for salvation? Jesus
brought to fullness the precept of love and taught us to pray:
“Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass
against us”. Infinite forgiveness is based on man’s compassion for
the error of his neighbor.
- St. Paul in the second reading reminds us that a Christian
is a man who admits only one Lord, both in life and in death: “if
we live, we live for the Lord; if we die, we die for the Lord; in life
and in death we belong to the Lord”. Therefore, the believer in
Christ flatly refuses to bow down to anyone else who claims to act
as “Lord” and not as a servant of the community and society
- Our task during this week is to remember how many
times our God has forgiven us, which have been the most serious
sins that God has forgiven us and at the same time to think about
whether we have forgiven our brothers and sisters from our
hearts. Will there be any bitterness or resentment left in my heart
for the offense of a brother or sister?
- “I give you a new commandment,” says the Lord, “that you love
one another as I have loved you.”

“EL SEÑOR REINA ALTÍSIMO
SOBRE TODA LA TIERRA”
- El Evangelio de este domingo nos deja una gran enseñanza sobre el
perdón. El Apóstol San Pedro le pregunta a Jesús cuántas veces se
debe perdonar al hermano que lo ha ofendido: “¿cuántas veces tengo
que perdonar? ¿hasta siete veces?”. La respuesta de Jesús no contiene
cálculos humanos, sino que está marcada por su infinita misericordia;
“no te digo hasta siete veces, sino hasta setenta veces siete”. Así
podemos comprobar que el Evangelio es un pregón de perdón total y
de liberación completa. No basta, pues, que deje de haber oprimidos,
sino que es necesario conseguir que no haya más opresión. Solamente
así el antiguo deudor perdonado no se convertirá en nuevo opresor.
- Los hombres somos mediadores unos con otros para bien o para mal.
Facilitamos o impedimos el crecimiento de la gracia, de la salvación, de
la liberación total. Al nacer, se nos entrega un mundo, un mundo viejo,
sin embargo, provisto con la imagen de Dios. Cristo es el principio,
la imagen del Padre y el prototipo del hombre nuevo. En Jesucristo
podemos observar el mayor ejemplo de perdón, en su agonía perdonó
a sus asesinos: “Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que hacen”.
- La antigua ley del “ojo por ojo y diente por diente” o el elemental
instinto de venganza han tenido un correctivo en el “mandamiento
del perdón” (Lv 19, 17-18). En la primera lectura el sabio ahonda y
comenta: “¿Cómo puede un hombre guardar rencor a otro y pedir
la salud al Señor?”. Jesús llevó a plenitud el precepto del amor y nos
enseñó a orar: “perdónanos nuestras ofensas, como también nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden”. El perdón infinito se asienta en la
compasión que el hombre tiene del error de su prójimo.
- San Pablo en la segunda lectura nos recuerda que un cristiano es un
hombre que admite a un único Señor, tanto en vida como en muerte:
“si vivimos, vivimos para el Señor; si morimos, morimos para el Señor;
en la vida y en la muerte somos del Señor”. Por eso, el creyente en
Cristo se niega rotundamente a inclinarse ante otro cualquiera que
pretenda actuar como “Señor” y no como servidor de la comunidad
y de la sociedad.
- Nos queda como tarea durante esta semana recordar cuántas veces
nuestro Dios nos ha perdonado, cuáles han sido los pecados más
graves que Dios nos ha perdonado y al mismo tiempo pensar si hemos
perdonado de corazón a nuestros hermanos. ¿Quedará algo de rencor
o resentimiento en mi corazón por la ofensa de algún hermano?
- “Os doy un mandamiento nuevo –dice el Señor-: que os améis unos a
otros como yo os he amado
